Last week, as part of Texas Design Week, I hosted a design trend talk at Poliform Houston to discuss the 2017 hospitality and home design trends. Houston’s inaugural Texas Design Week brought some of the biggest names from throughout the design industry to give keynote speeches, book signings, and salon talks during the week-long event.

I am so glad I had the opportunity to be a part of this amazing event and share my knowledge of design for hospitality and home interiors. Over the last few weeks, I have completely submerged myself in the world of design by attending HD Expo, High Point Market, and Houston Spring Market. I can truly say that I have seen the best of the best in product design for the interior design industry. I look forward to sharing all my experiences with you in an upcoming blog post, but for now, I have a quick and concise rundown of the top home trends to follow for your next design project.

HOME TRENDS

TERRACOTTA
This clay like ceramic that can be glazed or unglazed is being brought back to life and used more in residential design. Unlike in the 80s, Terracotta is no longer used as border tiles. Instead, they will have a natural matte finish and be used as feature walls in bathrooms or for cladding fireplaces. Terracotta tiles will replace currently popular cool and white tones to add character and warmth to interiors again.

CORK
Believe it or not, cork is making a comeback! Not only is cork a stylish material idea that can add texture to spaces, it’s also ideal for absorbing noise in our increasingly large, open plan homes. Cork is a versatile material that can be used in coffee table bases in combination with stone tops, and as solid cork stools or side tables.

UPHOLSTERED HEADBOARDS
Beds will change dramatically in 2017, with upholstered headboards set to replace the rustic timber bed frames currently dominating the market. Whether you opt for a classic model in a neutral color with buttons or a plush one in velvet, a stylish headboard is an easy way to update and add instant glamor to a bedroom.

SECRET BEDROOMS
Homes with hideaway nooks will become increasingly popular as humans adapt to a technological way of living. With an ever-increasing amount of time spent in front of a computer or smartphone screen during the day…there will be a greater desire to create spaces in our lives devoid of digital distraction. Relaxed furniture and materials will follow suit with Look raw, earthy textures like timber, clay, and wicker.

NAVY & BLUE INTERIORS
Color schemes have moved over to the dark side. A new study from Sherwin-Williams reveals that 62 percent of Americans chose blue as their favorite color. According to the study, 45 percent of people love the color of the sky and associate it with calmness. 

WOOD TILE
Adding this rustic wooden accent to rooms throughout your home can instantly radiate feelings of comfort because there’s no reason wood should only be on your floors and tabletops but I think it is becoming a little too common.

SCANDINAVIAN WAY OF LIFE
A new Scandinavian way of life that has us begging for cozy nights around the fireplace. It’s all about embracing your loved ones and your closest relationships in the warmest and most comfortable settings. This search is taking over 28% of Pinterest.

ACRYLIC AND PRINTED ON METAL DÉCOR
Brighten up any room in your home with acrylic decor. Whether it’s a chic acrylic coffee table or a photo frame, the clear accents bring the simplest furniture pieces to life. The sleek trend was up 50 percent since last year and is the perfect decorating tactic all year-round.

HEATED FLOORS
Is there anything worse than coming out of a shower in the dead of Winter to a freezing cold bathroom floor? We don’t think so, and because everyone should be able to walk around their homes without slippers, heated floors are the move for 2017, with searches up 54 percent. Radiant heating.
