1. Pick the right size

The number one factor to consider when purchasing a coffee table is size.  Measure your living room area and how much walking space you want/need to keep the room functional. Once all seating has been determined, make sure to leave a minimum of 15’’ all the way around the coffee table to have room to move around; 18 – 20” is optimal. Also, make sure the coffee table is the same height as your seating or 2 inches lower. If it’s too high or too low, it will look out of scale and make the room look disproportioned depending on the surrounding furnishings. Sooo-breakout that measuring tape and make sure you have the right size and dimensions in mind before heading out to shop.

2. Function is Everything

The next step to consider is the function of the coffee table in the space. If you have a smaller room you may want a coffee table with drawers or with multiple platforms to store things. This is great option if you have children. You can never have enough storage space to hide coloring books and crayons when entertaining. If you have a larger room, you have the option to go with a larger coffee table or 2 smaller ones. If you can’t find anything that fits opt for two small side tables instead. Two side tables work great as a coffee table alternative. If you have a large sectional or more angular furniture, go with a round coffee table to make the shapes pop and increase functionality.

3. Consider Different Materials

Material is very important if you have children or pets. With the kiddos or pets running around you never know when you will get a juice spill or scratch on the coffee table. For more durable options go with distressed wood, metal or concrete but make sure you purchase a more oval shape to keep it safe from pointy corners. If you prefer to go with something fancier like marble add a glass table top to keep it safe from being stained.

4. Keep it Stylish

After considering size, function and material look for something that will complement your interior decor. If you have a modern or contemporary style like myself, go with a table with clean straight lines. If you have more of a traditional taste try a tufted ottoman instead of a regular coffee table. Ultimately your coffee table can tie your entire design together it just depends on what results you are looking for.
