My hunger for fashion and design was fulfilled this past weekend at the IIDA Houston City Center Product Runway 2017 fashion show. This year, I was invited to act as the official behind the scenes blogger for the 9th annual design competition.
Product Runway is a phenomenal event because it puts teams of interior design and architecture professionals and interior design students in a fashion design competition by creating handmade garments out of standard architectural finish materials such as glass, tile, carpet and wood.
This year’s theme, Cover to Cover, required each team to create a look inspired by a specific work of literature that has been assigned at random. Teams then created their looks entirely from scratch, collaborating with their garment label representatives to select goods that best reflected their particular novel. Each team was assigned one hard material, one soft material, and one wild card garment label, which had to collectively make up 80% of their final garment.
I had so much fun covering this event and now I’d like to share the behind the scenes experience with you. As a designer, I am so inspired by the materials that were used and how well crafted each garment was constructed. Texture and color is important in fashion and interior design, and I can firmly say that thought and creativity were put into each garment on the runway.

Congratulations to each team, your work was truly innovative and beautiful. Special thank you to the vendors who provided all materials that you see used in the garments featured. Product Runway benefits the Houston Furniture Bank, a non-profit organization that provides a more comfortable and livable environment while making empty houses homes for Houston’s needy families.
