WHILE NINA MAGON’s mid-century modern home may be tucked away in a central Houston neighborhood, the vibes are all about white-hot Miami. “Miami is one of my favorite places in the country; it’s where I feel most / comfortable. I love the culture and the feel of the place,” says Magon, who is the creative director of Contour Interior Design in Houston.
Magon and her family vacation in Miami often, and the designs she’s encountered there inspired the transformation of this 6,000-square-foot home. “This place feels very Miami because of its split levels,” says Magon of the unique one-and-a-half-story home that sits on a one-acre lot in a village-type neighborhood.
The house boasts stunning mid-century architecture, like a butterfly roofline and brick exterior, but Magon says certain quirks kept it from selling and it was considered by some as a teardown. “This house was a home that no one wanted,” says Magon. No one but the designer and her builder husband, who immediately saw massive potential. “We knew we could easilv transform it into our dream house. The great thing about being a design-build couple is that vou can see what others can’t and envision the beauty.”
The couple completely reimagined the home into a modern-day white jewel box-which was daring since they have two small children.
